August 17th 2008

It was so good to sleep at home. I then went back to my home church for the first time in three months. I wore my shirt that I got in Bolivia. When I got to church I was greeted by several of people and welcomed home. It has been a little difficult for me because I still think in Spanish sometimes. However, they had me stand up in church and they welcomed me home. This made me feel my special and blessed. After church, I was invited to come share my experience at the mission committee’s meeting in September. Also, several of people talked to me about my experience and welcomed me home. When talking with other people it was encouraging to know that they read my blog. It has been my hope that everyone who has read my blog has felt like they walked with me on this journey every step of the way. Also, it is my hope that everyone has seen what an emotional rollercoaster ride it is on the mission field. This experience has made me realize how much missionaries need prayer and appreciate what they do.

When I got to Miami, I went to through boarder protection. Next, I went to get my bags. After I got my bags, I went through customs without any problems. I then dropped off my bags and headed to go through security. Also, I made it through security without any problems because they sent me to another area that was less crowded. As soon as I got to my gate, I had time so I called my mom. It was good to talk to her and her voice for the first time in three months. As I waited for my plane, I thanked God that everything had gone smoothly and thought that since I had been polite with everyone helped. I had nobody next to me on the flight so I slept the whole plane ride to Philadelphia. When I got to Philadelphia, I got my bags and then waited for my mom to pick me up. My mom gave me a big hug and then took me out to eat. I enjoyed being able to talk with her as I ate and or the way home. While at home, I showed all the gifts that I got in Bolivia to my mom and then gave her, her gift. Then I went to visit my dad and surprise him for his Birthday. My dad was really glad to see me and he enjoyed the gift I brought back from Bolivia for him. After returning home I talked with my mom some more and then went to bed.

August 15th 2008

Even though I went to bed for the second latest time since I have been in Cochabamba, I still ended up waking up before my alarm went off. However, I was able to go back to sleep and then got up with my alarm at eight. It took me awhile to get out of bed, but when I did get out of bed I went downstairs to have breakfast. As I said my prayer for breakfast, I thanked God that this was my last breakfast of eating a piece of bread and having two glasses of water. After breakfast I came back upstairs to go back to bed since I was still tired. It took me quite awhile to fall back to sleep, but I was able to. I even ended up falling back to sleep after my second alarm went off. When I got up again, I did my morning devotion and asked God to help me have peace as I prepare to return home. I then quickly used the internet and then started to pack. It took me a long time to pack. Before I knew it, it was time for lunch. For lunch I had a piece of chicken with rice, along with tomatoes, onions, carrots, and a potato. After lunch I continued to pack and then I got ready for my day. When I was done getting ready for my day, I finished packing. Since, I still had plenty of time after packing; I decided to upload some pictures. While uploading some pictures, I finished reading my book. As I was reading my book, the grandfather came to see if I was in my room; he thought that I had left since I was so quiet. After finishing my book, I wrote an email to communicate my itinerary for returning home. Finishing the book really helped me to process this whole week of saying good-byes. I then relaxed the rest of the afternoon and tried to prepare myself for events at the airport and my return home. While relaxing, I realized that this week, my last week, went by really fast. Also, I read over my final ministry evaluation that was submitted and felt that this copy expressed that this was a learning experience. It also expressed the fact that I participated in many activities. In reading the email that was sent I felt blessed by the comments that were stated instead of feeling like this evaluation was harsh as I did before hand. Before leaving for the airport, I also updated my blog. Larry then came to pick me up to take me to the airport. As I was leaving, Susana asked me if I wanted to eat a little something before I left so I ate a little bit of picque macho. I also took time to thank Susana for being my mom for three months and then gave her a hug good-bye. She told me to keep in touch. Larry and I then made our way to the airport and discussed several of different topics about Bolivia. As soon as I arrived at the airport, I went to check my bags and then paid a fine for them being overweight. Then I had to pay an airport tax as well, but I had prepared myself well by planning ahead so I had enough money to pay for all this. We then waited for awhile before I had to go through security, so Larry and I continued to talk to pass the time. Next, I went to go through security and before I did said thank you to Larry and good-bye. When I went through security the alarm went of because of my money holder, but I was not given any problems. I still had to wait awhile before I could board the plane so I waited and watched the news all in Spanish, but I could understand it. As I watched the news I heard the announcement that they had changed the gate that my flight was leaving from so I went to that gate. I boarded the plane and then headed to Santa Cruz and thanks be to God that the flight was only ten minuets late. As soon as I got to Santa Cruz, I got back bags and headed to pay the airport tax for leaving the country, but I was misinformed so I went to get my boarding pass. While waiting in a long line to get my boarding pass; a man asked me if I spoke English or Spanish. When I told him both, he told me about the liquid regulations in Spanish to make sure I was aware of them. Next, I went through boarder patrol and immigration without out any problems. Before I knew it, I was on my way to Miami. On my way to Miami, I order Sprite to drink and had chicken with rice as my dinner. I watched a cartoon movie about an elephant for awhile and then slept the rest of the way. I was happy that I got isle seats for both of the plane rides.

August 14th 2008

I woke up a little bit before my alarm went off, but I was able to fall back to sleep. Since I fell back to sleep and was comfortable in bed, I reluctantly got out of my bed with my alarm at eight. Then I went downstairs to have a piece of bread and to glasses of water for breakfast. Lucas was downstairs along with his grandfather so I talked with them as I had breakfast. After breakfast I came up stairs and went back to bed since I still felt tired. However, I could not go back to sleep, so I got up and got ready for my day. Next, I did my morning devotion and then used the internet. I still had some time before I needed to leave for my last day at Casa de Nazeret. In that time I decided to relax and get myself mentally ready for the next couple of days. While relaxing I realized that I failed to mention on Tuesday that I have connected with what I have read in my book and it has helped me to understand my experience. Also, on Tuesday I had a discussion with Tom that helped me understand more of my experience in Cochabamba. When I was done getting myself prepared for the next couple of days, I decided to read some more of my book so I finish it by tomorrow. I then headed out for my last day with the boys at Casa de Nazeret. The truffi ride was normal except, I got out early so I could run into the grocery store to get matches for a craft that was due later tonight and chocolates for the boys as a good-bye and thank you present. I was successful in getting the chocolates, but no luck at all finding the matches. It also took me longer than I expected in the store so I thought that I was running late, but I had to remember that here in Bolivia there is no such thing as being late. Next, I went and caught a micro to the boy’s home and arrived later than I ever have. So late that I thought that I would be interrupting their lunch, but when I arrived they had not even started lunch. When I arrived I was greeted by the lady in charge and then by all the boys. For lunch I had this plate with some lettuce, tomatoes, onions, with a potato, a piece of cheese, and it was all covered in a peanut sauce. At lunch I sat with the boys and talked about many different topics. The funniest one was the fact that I grab two forks by accident instead of a knife and a fork so the boys and I laughed about it. During lunch I tried to act as if it was another normal day at the home. However, when lunch was almost over I saw the head sister go to one of the tables with some of the older boys and talked with them. The next thing I notice is the boys at the table look at me with an expression of shock and sadness so I figured that she had told them that this was my last day. When lunch was over, one of the boys from the table walked over with the head sister and the head sister announced that it was my last day and then the boy gave me a gift. Then the sister asked if anyone would like to say thank you to me and almost all the boys hands went up in the air which made me feel very special. Next, the sister called on about a dozen boys and they all said thank you to me for various things and then they came and gave me a hug afterwards. A majority of the boys thanked me for helping them with their homework, for taking them to the park to play soccer, and for being at the home with them. Some of them wished me well on my travels and made comments on my character. This was very nice of them and emotionally hard for me. The boys wanted me to open the gift afterwards so I did and it was a small bag for holding money that is typical here in Bolivia. It was then time for the boys to do their chores and so I talked with one of the other volunteers about flying back home because I have been told that flights are usually late here. It was then time for homework so I went into the room to help out one last time all the boys I could with there homework. I helped with solving math word problems the whole time during homework. This meant that there was every kind of math problem addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. After homework I was able to talk with Tom and he gave me matches so I went to do the project of creating the project of miniature replicas of some of the books of the Bible. Then I went to say good-bye to the other people at the boy’s home and then the boys that were still at the house. It was hard to say good-bye to the boys because all of them said that they did not want me to leave and when would I return. During this emotionally rough time, I told them that I had left my email with the volunteer who helps the boys send emails and that they can write to me. Next, I headed to the park to say good-bye to the rest of the volunteers and the boys who were with them. I gave the chocolates to the one volunteer who has a system of giving the boys chocolates and then say good-bye to the boys. All of them gave me a hug and then I told them what I had told them the information about my email because the same events of not wanting me to leave and when would I return occurred. I then headed up to Shawnee’s house for my meeting with her and my final time of taking public transportation in Cochabamba. When I got to Shawnee’s, I was greeted by Shawnee and then Omar and Paula as well as they were doing their homework for class later in the evening. Shawnee and I then went outside and she did her laundry, we had our meeting. We discussed the summer, my evaluation, and then I shared other thoughts that I had and events that happened while she was back in the United States. Before I knew it, it was time to head to class so Shawnee took us to class. On the way to class, we stopped at a grocery store to get a snacks and a drink. While Shawnee and Paula went shopping, Omar and I stayed in the car and talked about my time here and then Omar gave me a bracelet and basically repeated to me what he had told me as we were getting to go on the retreat. Basically, he told me I was Bolivian which made me feel very blessed to hear that. This class we talked about the homework that we were given and looked at several different Scripture passages that had analogies of what the Word of God is. I was able to share my thoughts and read with minimal difficulty. After class the youth showed up at the church office and so we greeted each other and then I made it a point to say good-bye to Father Walter. The youth along with Shawnee gathered with me to discuss what we wanted to do with each other for my final night in Cochabamba. It was then decided that since Shawnee had not been bowling here and neither have I; that is what we would do. So all of us went bowling; however, I did not realize until we got there that it was everyone’s first time bowling except for me. So Shawnee explained the rules and the how to bowl. In the beginning, nobody really did well but everyone got better as the game went on. I enjoyed bowling very much because it was a great time to socialize one more time with the people I have spent the most time with. I think everyone had great time because there was a lot of smiles and laughter. The game was very interesting for me because I did not do so well in the beginning. However, I came back and was able to break one hundred and so they said that I had won the game. We then drove one of the girls home because she had school tomorrow and her parents wanted her not to be out to late. Before she went into her house she said good-bye to everyone including me and wished me well with my travels. Afterwards, I thought that I would be going back to my house here in Cocabamba, but Shawnee had other plans. She asked the group what they wanted to show me before I left. So we went to this restaurant and got hamburgers, fries, and Coke to drink. During the time at the restaurant, the group went around telling jokes so we all laughed a lot. Then we went to this café and they showed me this game that is kind of like Yatzee. It was very fun and interesting because my team ended up winning both of the games that we played. Next, I was brought back to my house and prayed for by the whole group. All of them thank God for my example of coming into another culture and language and talking about His Word. They also prayed for my travels. This prayer was such a neat experience and once again a very emotional time for me. After the prayer, I received hugs and more well wishes from everyone in the group. I then gave Shawnee the bag with all the bookmarks and another present for Juan that I forgot to give him and asked her to give them out. She said that she wanted to copy Juan’s gift first and then told him he would get it later. Also, I thanked the group for everything and then said if it was at all possible that if I could come back for their retreat in January that I would be here. Then I told them that they were all good friends of mine and so I went around and got hugs from the whole group again. Before I entered my house, I decided to give Omar my cross because he said that he liked it the whole time I have been here and also he has helped me out a lot the whole time I have been here. Also, I had forgot to get my capo back from him I told him that he could have that as well or I thought he might give it to Samuel since he now has one. Upon entering my house, I immediately got ready for bed, said some night time prayers and went straight to bed.

August 13th 2008

This morning I had trouble getting out of bed because I had a good night sleep and was very comfortable. A little while after my alarm went off at eight; I finally got out of bed and went downstairs to have breakfast. However, there was nothing there so I got a glass of water. While I was drinking my water, the grandfather asked me what time I needed to leave and then went to go look for Adelina to ask her to buy some bread. Since he could not find her, he asked me if I could wait and I said that it would be no problem. Soon after this conversation, Adelina returned with Lucas and some bread. So I had my piece of bread and another glass of water for breakfast. Next, I came upstairs and got ready for my day and did my morning devotion. It was then time for me to leave to go to my last class of culture here in Cochabamba, Bolivia. I left later than normal which was better because the micro was less crowded. Still, I made it to the language school in plenty of time even though a detour was taken because they are working on one of the roads it normally takes. So I walk further than normal and waited for someone to come open the door for me. Since nobody came I waited and finally some of the other students arrived for the class so I went in with them. The class was about having a language helper which I did not think I needed. However, after the class, I thought that if I could have met with Juan more frequently that my Spanish would be even better than it is now. When the class was over, I said good-bye to the students who I have become friends with and to the teachers as well. Next, I walk to pick-up the last gift that I needed. While walking I ran into the man who helped Larry get the construction project and talked with him for awhile. Then I finally made it to the shop to get the gift and then head to Larry’s for my final formal meeting with him. However, there was a blockade so I had to walk all the way back to the language school to catch public transportation to his apartment. This also means I arrived later than expected so immediately we headed out to get some lunch. We went to a Chinese restaurant and I had lo mien with pork for lunch. On the way to the restaurant, at the restaurant, and on the way back from the restaurant, Larry and I had so many conversations about many different topics. When we got back to his apartment, we had our final meeting. We discussed some business items first. The business discussion went well as normal. Then we talked about my final ministry evaluation. This discussion was hard because I feel that some of the comments were not valid and others were harsh, but I keep trying to tell myself that this is all a learning experience. The final part of the meeting was to go over the debriefing questions that I answered for Larry. This was the best part of the meeting because it was an opportunity to recap what I liked and disliked about this experience. I also was able to talk about sharing this experience and remembering that some things in this culture are not culturally acceptable in America. While talking about different cultural experiences Larry and I laughed a lot. At the end of the meeting, Larry mentioned his concern for my weight. This was especially difficult since I am sensitive about this subject. However, I told him the good new about that I have already began to loose weight from being in Cochabamba for three months. When the meeting was over I ran with Larry to the travel agent to talk about my flight. Then we walked to American Airlines to confirm my flight for Friday. I then went back to Larry’s apartment to relax for awhile and then headed to my last worship practice. When I arrived to worship practice, I was later than normal but greeted by Omar, Samuel, and Padre Walter. As I got out my guitar I noticed that a string was missing off my strap and that my tuner was missing as well. I found the tuner but not the string. It was good to play one more time with the worship team. Shawnee came to the practice and it was good to see her and talk with her again. After practice, I was given a ride home by Omar and brought my guitar with me. When I returned to the house, I talked with Shawnee about having a meeting with her and if she could give out the gifts that I was not able to give people because I did not see them. She told me to hold on to them and that there would be a meeting after my class tomorrow night. Upon returning to the house, I decided since Luigi was home to thank him and give him his presents. Then Luigi, Quique, and I talked about and looked at cars on the internet. Luigi and I then stayed up talking about many different topics such as college work since he had a test tomorrow, about different thing that amazed us in life, and Luigi shared with me some of the problems and the way corruption happens here in Bolivia. It was late so I came back to my room and used the internet for awhile. Since I was so tired afterwards, I went straight to bed.

August 12th 2008

It took me quite a while to fall asleep last night. When I did finally get to sleep, I slept well until the morning. I then got up at eight with my alarm and went down to have breakfast. For some reason today there was not a lot on the table. So I got myself and glass and looked for the bread, but there was not a lot left in the bread bag. For breakfast I had a half of piece of bread and two glasses of water. After breakfast I got ready for my day and did my morning devotion. Then I waited for Anna to call me and hoped that my gifts would be ready today. Since she did not call me and it was past nine, I decided to head up to the house anyway. I made it to the hose just fine and realized that as I was on my way there that Anna had called me. When I arrived to the house I was greeted by Natta. Because I had some time, I decided to start my homework for my class on Thursday. While I was doing my homework, Anna came down and told me that Alfredo would be coming today. Also, talked with Omar about what I needed to do for class on Thursday that I was not clear about. Soon after Anna told me that Alfredo was coming, he arrived. I was blown away at what he had done and was very pleased with the work because he did more than I asked for. Next, Omar wanted to play ping-pong with me so I went to play with him. Today, Anna was not feeling well so Omar drove her home and I accompanied him. When we returned to the house, Omar and I went back to playing ping-pong. We played for a long time and then went in so Omar could practice his guitar skills and I went back to doing my homework for Thursday. I liked doing my homework because I was able to answer the questions and enjoyed the experience of refreshing my memory of what I have learned, but this time in Spanish instead of English. While I was doing my homework this time, Omar received a call from Shawnee to let him know when she would be back in Cochabamba. The time that I spent with Omar today was a true blessing because we had many conversations about many topics. He helped me when I did not know a word and I noticed that my speech seemed to flow when I was talking. Events like this make me feel as though I do not want to leave on Friday. After finishing my homework, it was time for me to head to Casa de Nazeret. So I asked Omar to let me out and told him I would see him tomorrow for one last worship practice. I made it to the boy’s home a little earlier than normal, but I was happily greeted by the lady in charge. It was then time for lunch and today I had a mixture of zucchini, tomatoes, onions, and ground beef with a potato. At lunch I talked with the boys about the food that I liked here and places I have or will be traveling to. After lunch while the boys did their chores, I went to read some more of my book. Next, it was homework time in which I helped several of the boys with multiplication and division problems along with counting by five hundreds and a thousand. However, today seemed to be different during homework because I felt like one of the boys did not understand or was trying to do his homework and that frustrated me. While helping with homework, I received a text message from Larry that said to call him to discuss plans for tomorrow. As soon as the homework period ended, I went with another missionary and the boys to the park to play soccer. We began with techniques and then we played a game. It was fun to play with the boys. Upon returning to the house after soccer, it was time for the boys to do their chores again so I went back to reading my book. Next, I changed for dinner and left to meet Juan for dinner. The micro ride was interesting because we were stopped for about five to ten minutes by a car blocking the street. To add to this madness the power was also out so the traffic lights did not work. Since I left early and was walking by Larry’s, I decided to do the Bolivian custom of stopping by. So Larry and I talked for a while about events that we have experience and made tentative plans for tomorrow. Then I went and met Juan for dinner. As I waited for Juan, Deacon Tammy passed me in her car and greeted me which I thought was a neat experience. For dinner I had Argentinean beef with fried potatoes. It was very good and I paid for the meal and it was not as much as I thought it was going to be. On the way to and from the restaurant, Juan shared with me some of the typical Bolivian activities of the youth. All during dinner, we had a good conversation about places we have been to and things that we have done in the past. This experience with Juan was another blessing and makes me wish that I have had activities like this during my whole time here in Cochabamba. Juan also helped me with words that I did not know. Also, I felt like the conversation felt normal because I understood what Juan was telling me or talking about. I was also able to express myself and talk fluently. After dinner I walked with Juan to a place where he could catch public transportation back to his house and me as well. Before departing, Juan wished me well and then I caught a truffi back to my house. I could not have asked for a better night with Juan, but the only thing I forgot to do was give him the gift that I had for him. So I hope that I will see him again or that I can give it to Shawnee to give to him. Upon returning to the house, I decide to give out the presents because I did not know if I would have another opportunity to. So I said thank you to Susana, Quique, and Lucas. All of them were very appreciative of the gifts especially since all of them were from the United States. I also gave Adelina, the housekeeper, a gift and thanked her as well. Saying thank you and good-bye at the same time was hard and good at the same time. It was hard because it was sad that I would be leaving these people who have been my family for the past three months. I even told them that I enjoyed having three brothers for three months. The good part about it was the fact that I knew enough Spanish to be able to say I what I wanted to say. Luigi was not home so I hope I can catch him at another time to give him his gifts. After giving out the gift, I went back to my room to use the internet. It was then pretty late so I got ready for bed, said some night time prayers, and went to bed.

August 11th 2008

Even though I went to bed tired last night, I did not have a good night. For some reason I was restless and cold one minute and then hot the next. So it was difficult for me to get up with my alarm at eight. However, I did get up reluctantly and went downstairs to have breakfast. For breakfast I had two glasses of water and a piece of bread. After breakfast I immediately began to get ready for my day. Then I did my morning devotion and headed out to pick up the last of my gifts, hopefully. I took two truffis to get to Shawnee’s house for my meeting. The first one I had to take was full so I went to my second option. This also means that I had to walk a ways to catch the next truffi. I arrived at Shawnee’s house in plenty of time and so I waited. While I waited, I had a good conversation with Anna about me leaving and my plans for the future. She asked me if I would return to Bolivia and also said that she would like to see the United States someday. During our whole conversation, she helped correct me if I mispronounced a word or did not know a word. Anna has helped me with my Spanish the whole time I have been here in Cochabamba. I also had some time to read some more of my book. In reading the book, it helped me figure out some of the reason I had some bad feelings about being here in the beginning of my trip. Then the phone rang and it was Alfredo who I was to meet to get my gifts. He called to say that he could not come today because my gifts were not finished. Alfredo also asked if he could get them to me the twentieth of August, but Anna told him that I was leaving this Friday. So Anna negotiated with him to have my gifts tomorrow so I agreed to travel there again tomorrow. Anna took my number and told me that she would call Alfredo in the morning and then me to let me know if my gifts are finished and I can pay for them. I then read a little bit more and then talked more with Anna. This time we talked about our families and being able to speak another language. We also talked about my life at college. The majority of our conversation was about the fact that Anna was amazed that I know how to cook and wash my own clothes. She then told me about how a lot of people here do not know how to do either. Also, she informed me that a lot of the men here expect the women to do everything. I said that I have noticed that as well. We also talked about me continuing to practice my Spanish when I return home so I can continue to be bilingual. I was so involved in the conversation that I lost track of time and ended up feeling like a Bolivian. So I left later than I wanted to and took a truffi and micro to get to Casa de Nazeret. However, I had to wait quite awhile to catch both the truffi. It amazed me that I still arrive at the boy’s home a little bit later than normal, but I did not miss a thing. When I arrived, I was greeted by the boys and the other people at the home. Before I knew it, it was time to have lunch. They had special guest today for lunch; the principle of the school and their music teacher so we ate outside. As I went outside, I felt like I was a celebrity because a few boys from each table were asking me to come sit with them for lunch. For lunch I had ground beef mixed with pasta, potatoes, and vegetables. At lunch the boys asked me my favorite sports and I talked with them about their school schedule for this week since they told me that they did not have classes on Thursday and Friday. After lunch and while the boys did their chores, I went to Tom so I could finish my volunteer form. I finished it and then handed it to the sister who requested it. Next, it was homework time in which I help by checking a boy’s math homework. Today, I felt bad for the boy because he had to count and writing out numbers adding three from on thousand, five hundred to two thousand. I found one mistake about half way through and so he ended up starting all over again from that point. He was so disappointed that I found a mistake and he thought that he would not be able to go play soccer. I told him that if he did not finish that I would wait with him and then take him to go play soccer. However, he finished in time and I checked it and it was good so he was able to go with us to play soccer. Soccer today was just working on techniques since there were not a lot of boys who could go because of tests or had other activities. Upon returning from soccer, the boys did their chores, showered, and got ready for dinner. While waiting for dinner, I sat with on of the boys and read some stories with hi. The whole day I was impressed that it felt really natural to me to speak in Spanish and that being corrected by people has become minimal because my Spanish has improved greatly. As I left today, a lot of the boys made an effort to said good-bye to me. Then I caught my micro and truffi back to the house. As soon as I arrived back to the house, I had dinner. For dinner I had steak mixed with pasta and potatoes along with many vegetables. At dinner I enjoyed the company of Susana and enjoyed listening to their conversations. After dinner I came back to my room to relax a bit and use the internet. While using the internet there were many emails I needed to reply to especially regarding my flights home so it took me longer than I expected. I decided that it would be best if I gave out the presents to Susana’s family tonight because I am not sure of my schedule in the evenings the rest of the week. However, Susana’s family seemed to disappear so I hope I can maybe do it tomorrow. Next, I made a phone call to hopefully set-up dinner plans with my friend Juan tomorrow. The phone call went well and I will be meeting Juan tomorrow for dinner. As I went to make the phone call, I noticed that Susana’s family was having a Bible study. Since, I noticed this I decide to stay up to catch them to give them the gifts tonight. However, it sounded like there were some problems so I decided to wait to give out present until the waters were a little calmer. It was then time for me to do my night time devotion, get ready for bed, and go to bed.

August 10th 2008

For one of the few times I can remember, I slept until my alarm went off at nine. However, it took me awhile to get out of be because I did not want to. I did get up while the sun brightly shinned in my room. Then I went downstairs to have breakfast and when I got there I was greeted by Susana, Luigi, and Lucas. For breakfast I had my usual piece of bread and two glasses of water. During breakfast, Susana talked with Lucas about the election today. Also, we all talked a little bit about sports such as golf and baseball. After breakfast, Susana told me that since water leaked from my bathroom yesterday that everything was bad in there and not to use it. She said that I could use hers or the one that is downstairs. Next, I came back up to my room to try and go back to bed since I just want to relax today. I was not able to sleep, but I thought about all the experiences I have had and about things I would like to do or need to do before I leave. When I got up again, I got ready for my day and then decided to fill out as much as the volunteer form that I could and planned to complete it on Monday with the help of Tom when I go to the boy’s home. It was then my desire to read my book for awhile. Doing the volunteer information sheet and reading my book took me until it was time for lunch. Before lunch I was also able to do my noon time devotion. For lunch I had steak with rice, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, and a potato. At lunch Susana told me that she had made this drink that was mandarinia juice with lemon soda and wanted me to try it. So I tried it and thought that it was actually pretty good. After lunch I typed up my retreat devotion that I did yesterday and then typed up an email to send later this evening. While typing this email, Larry called me to let me know that he tried to send me and email and it said that my box was full so I told him I will deal with this problem later tonight when I use the internet. Next, I went back to reading my book since I am enjoying it so much and think that God is speaking to me through it. When I took a break from reading, I started thinking about the different things that I have learned since I have been in Cochabamba. One lesson is from the sermon yesterday given by Deacon Tammy about that nothing can tear us away from the love of God. Another lesson that I learned is not to be so self-focused. Every time I encounter a Bolivian or a person that has lived in a collectivistic culture; they always take time to ask me how I am doing. It is also important to take time to express your feelings in every situation. As I have mentioned the sense of touch and affection here is completely different in a Bolivian culture than in America. Another incident that hit me yesterday was the fact that two people told me that there cell phones were stolen from them. However, when they talked to me about it; it seemed like it is a part of life for them. I have come to the realization that I have learned many lessons her in Cocabamba and since I seem to be getting new insights everyday; I am sure that God has more lessons for me to learn from this experience when I return to the United States. Another insight that I have has is that when I talk with someone in Cochabamba I normally have their total attention, and they do not get distracted or they will ask the other person to wait until they are done speaking with me. When I thought my mind was done processing all the experiences I have had; I did my evening devotion. Next, I read until dinner time. For dinner I had a fried egg, cooked tomatoes and onions, and a potato. At dinner Susana told me that Evo won the election. We also talked about how people are scared to come to Bolivia because of Evo. I also found out from Susana that she thought there would not be any problems tomorrow which is good and means I can go out and do what I want to. Upon returning to my room after dinner I decide to go back to reading. As I got tired of reading, I decided to call it a night. So I got ready for bed, did my night time devotion, and went to bed.

August 9th 2008

As I started to wake up this morning, I thought today was going to be good weather wise. The sun was brightly shinning and I felt as if I had a good night sleep. When my alarm went off at nine, I got up and went downstairs for breakfast. I had my usual piece of bread and two glasses of water. At breakfast Adelina told me about what she had done for me for lunch and that the family would not be back until much later today. After breakfast I came back up to my room to lie in bed and enjoy peace and quiet. As I lie in bed, I thought about things that I need to do and rehearsed saying good-bye for later today and this evening. When I decided to get up again, I did my morning devotion and got my gifts to write some messages on them. After writing a to-do list and messages on my gifts, it was time for lunch. I began to get ready for my day and then had lunch. For lunch I had chicken with rice, lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, and a potato. At lunch, Susana informed me that Quique had to spend the night in the hospital because his asthma was acting up. After lunch, I finished getting ready for my day. As I was finishing, Quique told me that there was a lot of water downstairs, but said I could continue to use the sink. Before leaving early for youth group, I had some time so I used the internet. I then left for youth group and easily caught the two truffis I needed to, to get there. As usual I arrived early, so early that nobody was at the house. So I waited for awhile for them to arrive home. When they arrived home, I was greeted by them and then went into the house. They did not have lunch yet so I let them eat lunch and I went into another room and thought more about what I wanted to say. While thinking, Paula came in to tell me that they were starting a dance ministry tonight and asked me how I felt about leaving. Since, nobody else seemed to be showing up for youth group, I decided to think, work, and write out my devotional I will be leading on a retreat when I return to the United States. After finishing it, I went upstairs to see what the other people in the house were doing. We ended up watch a Kung-Fu movie and I just sat there and enjoyed my time with the people from the youth group. Another movie we watched was As Good as it Gets and I enjoyed talking with them and being with them during this movie as well. Since there was no official youth group, I did not get to say good-bye to everyone as I had planned. It was then time to leave to go to church. I went downstairs and waited by the car until everyone was ready. On the way to church, the youth teased me about if I had found a girl to take with me back to the States. When I got to the church I got ready for the service by tuning my guitar. Before the service, I talked with Deacon Tammy and Larry about getting pictures with them. Also, I talked with Larry a little bit about staying home tomorrow during the election and my night so far. We then had the service and it felt great to play the music and be able to say all the parts of the service. There was a special time of prayer during tonight’s service and I had Padre Walter and Omar in my group. Padre Walter wanted to pray for me and my time here and Omar also prayed for me. Then we prayed that God would have His hand on the election tomorrow and that there would be peace. Before the service was over there was the first presentation which I think was and is good for the church to have. At the end of the service, Padre Walter called me up front to pray for me and had some people from the congregation come around me to lay hands on me. It was a very touching prayer and it made feel that even though I struggled at some point that God wanted me to be here. After the service, I was able to get all the pictures I had requested. After my picture with Deacon Tammy and Padre Walter, I talked with Deacon Tammy about going to the same seminary she did and possibly getting together when she comes back to the States next year. Also, I went around to the youth that were there to thank them and give them my present. It was hard for me, emotionally to say good-bye because all the youth said that it was no problem and that they were happy to have me here and they were upset that I am leaving soon. I did not have a problem speaking Spanish with all the youth to thank them and say good-bye to them. As I went around saying good-bye, Larry and I figured out how I was going to get home so I took a taxi with him to his apartment. I made sure to say good-bye to all the people that I have built relationships with and all of them mentioned the fact that they would like to keep in touch. Before leaving, plans for the youth and I to get together again were attempted to be made, but nothing clear was made. The plan as of now is to do something Wednesday evening, I am guessing after worship practice. I made plans to meet with Juan this week and also my friend Marcelo said he wanted to get together with me this week. After taking a taxi back to Larry’s apartment, I waited with some of Larry and Betty’s friends. While waiting, I talked with Larry about technology and what time we are leaving to go to the airport. Then the friends of Larry and Betty gave me a ride home. On the way to my house I was able to have a good conversation with them about learning Spanish, my time in Cocabamba, and other topics. They told me that they thought my Spanish was very good and even said that my pronunciation was good as well. As soon as I returned to the house, I got ready for bed, said some night time prayers, and went to bed.

August 8th 2008

As I have stated at other points, the weather here has been really weird. The sun did not brightly shine in my face and so it was difficult for me to get out of bed. I think that not sleeping well the night before and going to bed later than normal added to this difficulty as well. However, I did get up with my alarm at eight and went downstairs to have breakfast. I had my normal piece of bread and two glasses of water for breakfast. Since I was still feeling tired, I came back upstairs and tried to go back to bed. I had a little difficulty at first because the marching band was practicing for a competition that is today. Although it was difficult at first, I was able to sleep for awhile. When I got up again, I did my morning devotional and got ready for my day. Also, I edited my last paper that is due today and that I will submit via internet later tonight. It did not take me long to edit my paper so I had plenty of time before I had to leave. In this time, I used the internet and then read some more of my book. Before I knew it, it was time for me to head to my last Friday at Casa de Nazeret. I am glad that I left a little early because after taking a truffi, the micro I took had to take a detour because they were working on part of the road. Even though, there was a detour I still arrived early before any of the boys so I helped another volunteer with her puzzle. When the boys arrived back from school, they all greeted me. Once again today it was like the boys were competing to change out of their school clothes and then come to me to ask me if I would help them with their homework. So I said that I would help all the boys who asked me to help them. It was then time for lunch which today was pasta with a meat sauce and then closest food to Italian that I have had at the boy’s home. At lunch the boys and I talked about the Olympics, math, and about capitals of different countries. While the boys were doing their chores, I went back to working on the puzzle because for some reason it felt relaxing. It was then time for homework in which the first boy who asked me to help had to do the math problems on his own so I told him that I would check them after he was finished. I then went to another to help two other boys who asked me for help. With one of the boys I helped him with both division and multiplication problems and the other boy I helped with just division problems. Next, I went back to check on the first boy and while at his table helped another boy with his addition and subtraction problems. I was also able to help another boy with his division problems. While the boys had a snack I went back to working on the puzzle. I then went to the park with another missionary and some of the boys for soccer. On the way to the park, the other missionary explained to me that this weather is unusual and usually occurs in November. We began with working on techniques and then we played a game. During both practicing techniques and playing the game, it rained, the wind was blowing strong, and for one of the few times I have felt cold. When I returned to the boy’s home after playing soccer, I went back to working on the puzzle. I was so involved in working on the puzzle that I lost track of time and ended up leaving later than I had planned. While working on the puzzle, I had the opportunity to talk with the other people at the home about good restaurants here and then they wonder when my last day was so I informed them that it is next Thursday. Also, I was given a form that all volunteers have to fill out, but the one guy tried to get me out of it since I will only have worked there for a short period of time and so I have to do that sometime. Since, I left later than normal; I waited longer to catch a micro and then a truffi home. As soon as I returned to the house, I went to my room to drop off my backpack. Then went downstairs and heated up my dinner and then ate it. For dinner I had pasta that had beef in a gravy with carrots, peas, and green bean, along with a potato. When I finished eating dinner, I returned to my room to relax and then Susana came to give me the rest of the presents that I gave her money to pay for yesterday. I felt that it would be good for me to relax for the rest of the evening so I did. As it was getting late, I decided to use the internet to submit my school which was such a relief. Then I got ready for bed, did my night time devotion, and went to bed.

August 7th 2008

It was not at good night at all last night. First, it took me longer than normal to fall asleep. Then I woke up well before my alarm went off and had trouble getting back to sleep. Also, as my alarm was about to go off, I was awaken by screaming and crying children. When my alarm did go off, I went down stairs to have breakfast. For breakfast I had my usual piece of bread and two glasses of water. At breakfast, I was greeted by Quique and then the crying and screaming continued. After breakfast, I went back to my room to try and go back to sleep for awhile since I did not have a good night. As I lied in bed, I started getting a headache and body aches so I was not able to go back to sleep. When I got back up, I did my morning devotion and prayed that my day would get better. Next, I took some medicine to try and feel better and then got ready for my day. I then received a phone call from Larry saying that he would be at my place in five minutes to take me to do my final shopping. I finished getting ready and went out to meet Larry who was already waiting for me in a taxi. This shopping time was successful; I was able to get gifts for those who helped me a lot and even got a farewell present to give to the youth group. Also, I went to the post office with Larry and while there made a stop in one of the stores to get a gift for the housekeeper Adelina who has been very flexible with my schedule. Larry and I then headed back to his apartment, but on the way stopped to see if the music had been copied and put into a book like I asked for. We waited a couple minutes and then received it and then returned to the apartment. On the way back to the apartment we ran into Bob and Meg so we talked with them for awhile. While at Larry’s apartment, I rested and looked over the music that had been copied to see if it was copied well which it was. It was then time for me to head to Casa de Nazeret so I walked down the street to catch a micro there since I was already half way there. As I was waiting for the micro, Omar and Paula came by so they gave me a ride to my work. It was good to talk to them on the ride there because every time I speak in Spanish I feel that I improve. When I arrived at Casa de Nazeret, all the boys cheerfully greeted me. I also had one of the best feelings afterwards because it seemed like the boys were in competition to get to me first to ask for help with their homework. Several of them came and asked me for help while I was helping another volunteer do a jigsaw puzzle. It was then time for lunch in which I had rice with a fried egg, green beans and tomatoes. During lunch the boys talked with me about what other countries I have been to and to describe what Pennsylvania is like. After lunch it was time for me to supervise as the boys did their chores. When the boys were through with their chores, it was time for homework. For homework I helped all the boys who asked me to help them so that means that I moved around a lot. Most of my help today was in the subject of math. I helped one boy with single digit division. Next, I helped three other boys with multiplication and was even able to do a check that they do that is different than what I am used to in the United States. Then I helped the same boys with single and double digit division. As it was close to snack time, I helped a boy finish his math homework that dealt with order of operations. As soon as the boys were done we headed to the park to practice soccer. First, we did techniques and then we were able to play two games. Since the weather has been unusual here with a lot of wind and feeling like it is going to rain; the boys showered inside since it was cold outside. After the boys had showered, some of them came and sat with me to show me how to play this game with marbles. I then stayed to have dinner with the boys. At dinner, I talked with the boys about the soccer game we played today and what our favorite sports were. For dinner, I had a very small bowl of soup that had some vegetables and rice in a chicken broth. After eating dinner, I went into the living room with the boys and one of them came to me to read a book with me. This was good because he would correct me if I mispronounced a word. Next, I left to go to the class of panorama of the Bible at the church office. When I arrived there was more food, so I had a piece of fried chicken with French fries and some Coke. While waiting for others to arrive, I helped translate some playing cards of this boy that were in English. This was the introduction to the course, so I filled out a paper that had some questions on it about general information about the Bible. We then were asked our expectations for the course. Also, we were given packets for the course and given homework for the next week. I understood and was overjoyed with how much I was able to participate in tonight’s class. The only thing I did not understand was about writing cards for next week, so I hope to clarify this on Saturday at youth group. Before leaving the class, I returned the music that Omar let me copy. Omar then drove me home since it was late. Upon returning to the house, Susana and her family were there with some guest and they were taking pictures which I decided to do as well. My prayer was answered of getting a picture of Susana’s family all together and one along with me as well. Afterwards, Susana and I tried to talk about some of my gifts, but then she wanted to take her guest home so she said that she would talk to me later. I then went to talk to Quique about events for this weekend and there were going to be blockades. Susana then returned home and so we talked about my gifts and gave her the money to pay for them and also I received information about this weekend from her. It was late by then, but I still decided to relax a little bit by using the internet. Since, I did not have a good morning; I felt really tired. So I figured that it would be best if I showered, said some night time prayers, and went to bed.

August 6th 2008

It was good that the day started as normal with the sun brightly shining in my face. However, it was before my alarm went off that I woke up. When my alarm did go off, I got up and went down to have breakfast. For breakfast I had a piece of bread and two glasses of water since water was delivered last night. After breakfast I came back up to my room and lied in bed. While in bed, I found that I reflected on my time here and some of the ways that this experience has changed me. One example is my prayer life is different, I pray for others more than myself now along with being able to pray in English or Spanish. My concern and the way I think has changed as well. When I got up again, I did my morning devotion and then read some more of my book. I took a break from reading to use the internet, but quickly went back to reading since I am enjoying the book. I read my book for the whole morning because since today is the Independence Day of Bolivia, there were no classes at the language school. However, in the afternoon I headed to Larry’s for my weekly meeting. It was a little difficult to get there because there was not a lot of public transportation because it is technically a holiday in Bolivia. Even though I had to wait quite awhile to catch a truffi to Larry’s I still made it there a little early. When I arrived I was greeted by Larry and then he let me look at the notes that Shawnee sent him for my evaluation. It was good to be able to read this even though I did not agree with one of the comments was made. Then I helped Betty make the lunch by mashing potatoes. While helping make lunch, I had a good discussion about my feelings about leaving and what I will do when I return to the United States. I had beef with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and a salad for lunch. During lunch we talked about people’s terrible experiences with dentist. We also talked about healing prayer and some of the events that have occurred in the church. After lunch it was decided by the group to wait awhile for dessert. So Larry and I went to talk and have our weekly meeting. We talked about my time here and what I have been doing. This meeting went different then all of the other meetings and I think that it was because we opened with prayer. In the meeting, we talked about my financial situation and doing my last shopping before Saturday so I have gifts for everyone as I say good-bye to them. During this discussion we also thought about gifts for some people that I did not know what to get them, but Larry said that it would be better to talk to Betty about this topic. I also informed Larry that I have written out responses to the questions he gave me in reflecting on my time in Cochabamba. My evaluation was also talked about and we talked about Larry’s role as my mentor. This discussion really opened my eyes to why I have had hurt feelings, but it was because I was experiencing a different type of supervision than I am used to. Usually, I dread these meetings but today I was happy that I told Larry that I wanted to meet with him today. After our meeting, we went to have dessert. For dessert there was a date cake with chocolate in it, plain macaroons, macaroons covered in chocolate, and coffee. While eating dessert we talked about financial situations of missionaries. Then we talked about some hair cut or hair styles in our lives that might have been a little crazy. When I shared some of my hair styles, Larry jokingly said he was going have to go change some comments on my evaluation. Also, I talked with Betty about presents and about giving me the information about praying; since I am getting better with praying in Spanish, but I would like to improve if possible. As I was getting ready to leave, Larry and I made plans for tomorrow to go finish my shopping. Then I went back to Bob and Meg’s house until worship practice. While at Bob and Meg’s house, I read some more of the book that I have been reading. In reading this book, it has really helped me understand my difficulties with a new culture and new environment. Before I knew it, it was time to go to worship practice. On the way to practice, Meg and I had a weird experience with her brakes so she called Bob and asked him to pick us after practice. Before practice I went with Paula and Meg to the store to get a cold soda for all of to share. Tonight’s practice went well and I hope that we keep the same places for Saturday so I can see the music. Also, I felt like I was able to play and sing all the songs and it was a true worship to God. After practice Bob came to pick us up and since he did not have money to pay for the taxi, I loaned them the money. Bob then drove me home and as soon I returned to the house the repaid me. As I got to the house, I arrived at the same time as Quique and was greeted by Susana as well. Upon returning home, I quickly used the internet, did my night time devotion, got ready for bed, and went to bed.

August 5th 2008

Since I had a good night sleep last night, I woke up a little bit before my alarm went off with the sun shining in my face. When my alarm went off at eight, I got up and went downstairs to have breakfast. I had the usual piece of bread and glass of water for breakfast. After breakfast I came back upstairs to lie in bed and relax or possibly go back to sleep. However, I was unable to go back to sleep so I decided to get back up. As soon as I got back up, I did my morning devotion. Then I took some more time to reflex on my time in Cochabamba and then I used the internet. After being on the internet, I decide that I would look at the Scripture for a devotional I will being doing on a retreat when I return home. I did this because I like to wrestle with it and allow God to give me insights to what he wants me to share with the group. Since I had a lot of time before I needed to leave; I started reading a book that Betty let me borrow and that was a recommended read before I left, but I never got the chance to read Gracias by Henri Nouwen. I was able to read a little bit of the book before I had to leave. My decision to leave early was a good on because the main road that the truffi normally was closed because some rocks fell off a truck and was blocking the road. So the truffi had to take another route, but I still got where I needed to go. Then the micro I took was extremely full so I was glad that I had all my valuables in my backpack; so nothing was stolen from me again. When I arrived at Casa de Nazeret, some of the boys were there because they did not have school today because tomorrow is Independence Day for Bolivia. However, all the boys greeted me and even when the rest of the boys came home; they greeted me as well. While waiting for lunch I played some soccer with some of the boys. It was weird today because as I was playing soccer, it was very windy and it even rained for a little while. This is the second time it has rained since I have been in Cocabamba. Then I even talked with one of the boys that I become good friends with. Also, Tom told me that he talked with Larry for my evaluation and said that my only problem is that I am quiet. However, Tom said that this is my personality and that it can not be changed. This information, some of the reading I have done, and the praying I have done before and while I am in Bolivia has helped me to know more and define my calling. It was then time for lunch in which I realized again I was quiet because the boys were talking at the table when I came and sat down and did not realize I was there until later on. For lunch I had really fatty piece of meat, with some cabbage, rice with cheese, and a potato. The boys at lunch talked about not having any homework since there is no school tomorrow. After lunch I supervised as the boys did their chores. As I went around, I went up to the same boy who I have become good friends with and instead of telling him to do his chore; I told him to do his homework so we both had a good laugh about that statement. Before it was time for the boys to do homework, I sat down with another missionary to figure out the method that they do multiplication and division here. When it was time to do homework, I practiced with one of the boys division problems. I think after working together for awhile he finally got it. Then he went to the other missionary who gave him a problem and he was able to do it without my help. I then went to the park with the other missionary and some of the boys to play soccer. However, the boys did not want to listen today. So I practiced passing and other skills with some of the boys. When the boys headed back to the house I decided to leave to go home since I heard that festivities start tonight for tomorrow, so I wanted to be home before it was dark. It took me a while to get home because the truffi that I normally take was full. So I walked quite a ways up the street to catch another truffi that goes near the house. Upon returning to the house, I used the internet and then noticed that Larry had called me, so I called him back. While talking with Larry, I lost the call but he called back so that we could confirm plans for meeting tomorrow. After talking with Larry, I decided to relax until dinner. For dinner I had beef in a peas and carrots gravy, long with pasta, and a potato. During dinner I talked with Susana, Lucas, Quique, and Adelina about today and its craziness. Susana told me about some blockades today and that there is an election on Sunday. I also saw Lucas walk a little bit with help and then told him that if he keeps using his foot that it will not hurt any more. When I was finished eating dinner, I went back to my room to continue reading the book that I had begun earlier on in the day. I read until I felt tired and then did my night time devotion, got ready for bed, and went to bed.

August 4th 2008

Well, I think that I had a pretty good sleep last night. I did start waking up as the sun was shining brightly in my face, but was able to go back to sleep. Then I got up with my alarm at eight to go downstairs to have breakfast. For breakfast I had a piece of bread and a glass of water since the water supply is running kind of low. After breakfast I came back upstairs to try and go back to be like I did last week, but I think I had too many things on my mind because I could not sleep at all. So I decided to get up again and do my morning devotion. When I had finished my morning devotion I got ready for my day and to try and so some more work before I left for my last full week at Casa de Nazeret. Before doing my work, I decided to quickly use the internet just to check email and send an important email. Then I got started on my work and in almost no time I was nearly finished with my last paper. However, I thought that it would be a good idea to take a break and relax awhile before leaving the house. After my quick break, I went back to work and was able to complete all the work that I have for college which is such a relief. Even though it was close to the time for me to leave, I still quickly used the internet again to check email, but the internet did not work. I then headed out to go to Casa de Nazeret. There were no problems going to Casa de Nazeret, just the fact that the public transportation seemed to be fuller than normal. I arrived surprisingly on time and since I was there before the boys I worked with another volunteer on a puzzle that she has been trying to complete for the past two weeks that I have been there. When the boys finally arrived back from school, they changed and then came to greet me. We then continued to work on the puzzle until lunch was ready. For lunch I had ground beef mixed with rice, peas and carrots, then fresh peeled carrots and tomatoes on top. The table that I sat at today wanted to know how much my clothing and earrings cost in the United States and then wanted me to tell them how much it was in Bolivianos. They also wanted be to flex for them again, but I did not since they asked at the end of lunch. After lunch it was time for the boys to do their chores and as I walked around to supervise them; I made small talk with them. Next, it was time for homework and I was able to help one boy with his fractions homework, but when it came to doing long division with him; I had problems explaining how to get a solution so I told him he could go work with another missionary. Then I went to help another boy with the same fractions homework and had better success in explaining how to get the answers to the long division problems. It was then time for snack and one of the boys came started hanging on me so I started carrying him around and then I jokingly told him I was going to throw him in the pool. He then stopped hanging on me, but seeing him laugh and smile was a lot of fun for me. After snack I went with another missionary and some other students from another language school to play a game of soccer with some of the boys. On the way to the soccer game I asked the other missionary if I was explaining the math problems correctly. He said that I was and then he offered to teach me some of the other math difficulties there are since the do math differently than how I would do it in the United States. The soccer game went really well and I think all the boys learned a lot and had fun in the process. After the soccer game I returned to the home with the boys and then left immediately because I felt really tired. Since I left early the public transportation was a little more crowded than normal. Also, went I got in the truffi to come home it was very short so when I got in I smacked my head on the roof. Returning to the home earlier than normal was nice because it was quiet and nobody was home. Upon returning to my room I checked to see if the internet worked since it did not earlier before I left. It was working so I checked email and used the internet until dinner time. For dinner I had this fried patty stuffed with vegetables and cheese along with rice, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, and a potato. Also, because the water is running low I decided to drink two glasses of lemonade with dinner. When I finished eating dinner, I finished using the internet and decided to relax the rest of the evening. As it got later in the evening, I did my night time devotion, got ready for bed, and then went to bed.
